How to Use This Glossary#
The definitions are deliberately short. Each one is written so that it can be lifted whole — by a reader skimming, or by a system composing an answer — without needing the sentence before or after it for context.
The terms fall into five natural clusters. Identity terms describe what is being optimised: entity, entity association, entity disambiguation, entity authority. Evidence terms describe what supports it: citation, corroboration, primary source, independent source, grounding. System terms describe the machinery: retrieval, crawlability, indexation, knowledge graph, semantic search. Outcome terms describe what success looks like: direct answer, answer ownership, entity selection, answer share. Process terms name the five stages: discover, understand, verify, associate, answer.

Terms This Glossary Deliberately Avoids#
Some vocabulary in circulation around AI search is either unstable or over-claimed, and this handbook does not use it. There is no entry here for a supposed “AEO score”, because nothing publishes one. There is no entry for “LLM ranking factor”, because no language model publishes ranking factors. And there is no entry treating “schema” as a synonym for AEO, because structured data describes information a page already shows — it does not create the evidence.
Where a term is genuinely contested, such as the boundary between AEO and GEO, the handbook says so on the AEO vs GEO page rather than settling it by definition here.
Terms That Have Their Own Pages#
The heavier terms in this glossary are not really definable in two lines. Each of these pages is the long version of one entry above.
- Answer Ownership — being the answer instead of supporting one.
- The Answer Gap — the space between search visibility and answer visibility.
- Entity Authority — the confidence stack, layer by layer.
- Retrieval — getting from published to selected.
- Semantic Search — how three wordings collapse into one subject.
- AEO Frameworks — the four frameworks, summarised in one place.
A glossary is a map, not a substitute for the territory. The entries that matter most are the ones with a page behind them.
Terminology Resources in the Project#
Terminology is the specialism of two other project domains; a third keeps the wider project reference.
- KingOfAEO.org — AEO explained without the title attached.
- WhoIsTheKingOfAEO.com — definitions rather than argument.
- TheKingOfAEO.com — the project hub, for context around all of this.
Where a term is genuinely standard in the wider industry, this glossary says so. Where it is this project’s own coinage, it says that too.
