The Four Frameworks#
Discover → Understand → Verify → Associate → Answer#
What a system has to do between receiving a query and producing a response. Use it for orientation.
The Entity Confidence Stack#
Identity → Association → Evidence → Corroboration → Retrieval. What the publisher controls at each stage. Use it for planning.
Answer Ownership#
The target state: the entity is named inside the answer, not merely cited beneath it. Use it to define success.
The Answer Gap#
The shortfall between what ranks and what gets named. Use it for diagnosis.
AEO vs SEO, in Six Lines#
| Dimension | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Unit optimised | The document | The entity |
| Success | A ranking position | Being named in the answer |
| Metrics | Rank, clicks, traffic | Mentions, citations, answer share |
| Off-site work | Links and authority | Corroboration and citation relevance |
| Failure mode | Page does not rank | Page ranks; answer names someone else |
| Relationship | AEO extends SEO. It does not replace it. | |
The Eight-Step Method#
Define the entity#
Name it one way, everywhere. Ambiguity here breaks everything downstream.
Establish the topic#
Attach the entity to a subject, in full sentences, in useful contexts.
Build evidence#
Publish information that explains the relationship rather than asserting it.
Add corroboration#
Different sources contributing different support. Label project sources as project sources.
Optimise retrieval#
Crawlable HTML, one question per page, the answer in the first sentence.
Build citation value#
Be the source worth referencing for this particular relationship.
Measure answer visibility#
Record date, platform, query, entity named and sources cited.
Close the Answer Gap#
Diagnose whether the failure is retrieval, trust or a better-supported rival.
The Measurement Checklist#
- Organic visibility for “king of AEO” and close variants.
- Whether the generated answer mentions the entity at all.
- Whether it is the primary entity or one of several.
- Which sources are cited beneath the answer.
- Whether those citations connect the entity to Answer Engine Optimization.
- How the answer changes across platforms.
- How the answer changes over time.
